Solar Hot Water FAQs2019-02-25T08:26:13+00:00

Solar Hot Water Frequently Asked Questions

In Australia it makes good sense to get your hot water free from the sun. Using the abundant available solar energy to heat your water means less energy you have to pay for compared to an electric or gas water heater. Energy savings also mean a reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

As Australia’s favourite manufacturer of solar water heaters, we get asked many questions about going solar. Hopefully the below responses will help you evaluate if a Solahart water heater is right for you.

What’s the importance of the staff in the process?2019-02-07T11:09:10+00:00

Our local Solahart Newcastle experts are qualified to assess your home and circumstances, and provide you with the best systems to meet your family’s needs. Our installers are trained to the highest standards to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your system. The success of your system is heavily reliant on the planning that goes in beforehand, which is why it’s crucial to have the right people on the job.

Is there an alternative to putting the tank on the roof?2019-02-07T11:09:16+00:00

Solahart’s range of Streamline Split System solar water heaters allows you to enjoy all the benefits of Solahart’s advanced solar technology – without the tank on the roof. The Solahart Split System locates the low profile collectors on your roof, with the tank installed at ground level. Alternatively you can choose a Solahart heat pump which uses technology to extract heat from the surrounding air, without solar collectors at all.

Does a Solahart take long to install?2019-02-07T11:09:28+00:00

If your current hot water system breaks down Solahart Newcastle can have you back in hot water within 24 hours in most instances.

What are the environmental benefits of a Solahart water heater?2019-02-07T11:09:33+00:00

Water heating accounts for around 25% of the average household’s energy usage. Getting your hot water free from the sun not only saves energy, it also saves the greenhouse gas emissions that would have been produced in the generation of that energy. By replacing an electric storage water heater with a Solahart you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 3.6 tonnes a year*, the equivalent of taking a small car off the road.

What are Small-scale Technology Certificates (STC’s) or STC rebates?2019-02-07T11:09:44+00:00

By installing a solar water heater system on your property, you are most likely still eligible for STCs. These STCs can be used to reduce the purchase price of your new system and can often save you thousands of dollars.

For a Solahart Solar Hot Water system, each STC represents 1 megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity displaced over a 10 year period. The number of STC’s created varies with the size and model of solar water heater and the region (or zone) in which the unit is installed. The value of an STC is not fixed and varies depending on market factors.

Once you install a solar water heater, the STCs produced can be traded and sold on the open market. You can assign the right to create your STCs to your Solahart dealer who will pay you the value of the STCs as an upfront discount on your system.

How much energy will a Solahart water heater save me?2019-02-07T11:09:48+00:00

This will vary depending on which part of Australia you live in, your current hot water system and hot water consumption, the model of Solahart you install, the orientation and inclination of the system. For example, by installing a Solahart 302KF, one of our most efficient models, you can cut your water heating energy consumption by up to 90%* in the hotter parts (Zone 1) of the country, up to 70%* in the temperate parts (Zone 3) and up to 55%* in the cooler parts (Zone 4). (These financial savings are achievable when replacing an electric water heater on continuous tariff.)

What about the quality of the systems you install?2019-02-07T11:10:00+00:00

For over 60 years, we have been setting the standard for solar systems in Australia. Our systems are designed for the harshest Australian conditions. Our solar power systems only use world-leading panels and the world’s best quality inverters. Our solar panels are consistent with Solahart’s quality and performance requirements, using state of the art PERC monocrystalline cells, designed to achieve excellent performance under real conditions, even with low radiation intensity and on clear hot summer days.
